Vina ALta

Vina Alta

Bodega ViƱa Alta are located in San Martin, just east of Mendoza in the Maipu subregion, which is lower in altitude than the Uco Valley and the subregion of Gualtallary in which Finca Sophenia are based. The area is well known for a range of indigenous varieties as well as the typical international varieties. The Bodega has been in the family for 60 years and holds 100ha, and used to produce fruit for a co-operative, however as of 2016 after the father passed, they chose to produce their own wines. The estate is run by Valentina Ludica, and her children Emiliano (wine director) and Candela (Vineyard & production manager) together they have steered the production towards an innovative, modern and minimal intervention approach, producing some different ranges of more approachable wines and also uniquely using some of their native varieties of which they fortunately had some very old vines. Their head winemaker Miriam Gomez, who brings her expertise makes really high quality and interesting modern wines. The farm operates with dry farming practices, utilising the irrigation from the Andean Acquia systems to catch snowmelt, they avoid herbicides and chemical input, and maintain natural biodiversity around the vineyard. This is a really exciting addition to the portfolio, particularly some of the styles from the indigenous varieties and of the Malbec which they age in cherry wood.
