Region

The demarcated region for Port wine follows the steep, winding river of the Douro. The region for centuries has had a history of viticulture created in harsh conditions, constantly flighting with the natural geography of the land. The region was founded in 1756 by the then Prime Minister, making the Douro region one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world. Beginning 75km east of the coastal city of Oporto at Barqueiros and stretching to the town of Barca d`Alva at the Portuguese - Spanish border. The region is then divided into three regions; Baixo Corgo (lower Corgo), Cima Corgo (Upper Corgo) and Douro Superior. Each sub region is separated by natural frontiers which gives them their own distinctive style and therefore allowing the Douro to produce a multitude of styles of Port wine.

Producer

DFJ Vinhos is one of Portugal`s most innovative and highly awarded wine producers, winning best Portuguese producer in both the New York International Competition and Berliner Wine competition in 2018. They control estates in the Lisboa, Douro, Setubal, Alentejo and Tejo wine regions and work with 22 different grape varieties. The company is headed by Portugal’s top winemaker, José Neiva, who has now been leading the way for over 40 years and, at the recent `Portuguese Wine Oscars`, he was made `Senhor do Vinho` - the highest accolade for an outstanding career.
Tasting Notes
Vega eminates from the steep terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley (home to the great Port houses) and is a sturdy table wine blended from three of the region`s best varieties; Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. It is rich and full bodied but very smooth in the mouth with plum, cherry and mineral elements and complex with a firm grip of tannins, typical of the region.
Food
Serve with pates, lamb or pork casseroles, roast red meats, game or strong cheeses.
