Region

The region of Burgundy spans the wine districts of Chablis around Auxere, south passing Dijon and Beaune in the Côte d`Or, to Mâcon and the granite hills of Beaujolais. This medieval Dukedom is an inland region, benefiting from warm continental summers and cold winters. The area is a patchwork of red iron-rich soils mixed with limestone and granite. Chardonnay is the dominant white variety, Pinot Noir and Gamay are the main red varieties.

Producer

Found in the heart of the Cote de Beaune, the picturesque village of Savigny-les-Beaune has for a long time earned its good name. It was here that the monks of Citeaux, the founders of the Burgundian vineyard system, became substantial property owners. In order to administer their vineyards they established a priory in the 16th century, hence the name. Today the 31 hectare domaine is owned by Jean-Michel Maurice, the mayor of Savigny, along with his son Stephen, who uses his international experience as winemaker.
Tasting Notes
This Bourgogne Pinot Noir is from a tiny two hectare plot just outside the Savigny appellation. It extols the virtues of pure Pinot fruit with a captivating ripe perfume. The palate is soft and silky with notes of cherry, raspberry and strawberry, fruity flavours which are balanced by earthy notes of mushroom and game. Light and supple tannins support the strucutre of the Pinot and lead into a ripe finish. A Savigny in all but name.
Food
A good wine to complement light meats, roast pork, coq au vin, as well as duck and goose.
