Region

The Northern Rhone region follows the Rhône River as it flows south of Lyon. Best known and suited for the Syrah variety shown in the great red wines of Crozes Hermitage and St Joseph, whilst the often perfumed and powerful white wines are made from the fragrant Viognier of Condrieu and the complex Marsanne and Roussanne blends created in the rare whites of Hermitage, Crozes and St Joseph.

Producer

Businessman and winemaker Rene Rostaing has parcelled together almost 20 plots of vineyard in Cote Rotie with vineyard sites in La Landonne, La Vialliere and Cote Blonde, each possessing its own distinct characteristics. He has also mastered the neighouring appellation of Condrieu, produced from the rare and fragrant Viognier grape variety. In 1996 Rene purchased a small estate in the Languedoc. It`s 12ha of limestone garrigue are planted with red and white Rhone varieties, traditionally vinified with maticulous care from low yields.
Tasting Notes
Ampodium is a blend of fruit from 20 different parcels across 15 to 16 lieux dits which, this year, also includes the always impressive Viallère. The wine is unusually open at this stage, being very expressive and generous with plenty of red and black cherry fruit. The palate is soft and rich yet with that wonderful freshness that defines Rostaing. This a surprisingly approachable and very delicious Ampodium.
Food
It pairs best with roasted lamb, duck breast, game meats, and earthy mushroom dishes.
