Region

The Southern Rhone is home to many famous appellations with a great variety of soils and microclimates, though in general sees ideal growing conditions that are warm and dry, with the Mistral wind proving a defining feature. Grenache forms the backbone of southern Rhône blends, including Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. With a range of varieties grown, the region sees a range of styles produced from quality red and white wines to the aromatic dessert wine Muscat de Beaumes de Venise.

Producer

Perched high in the spectacular Dentelles de Montmirail, Domaine des Florets cultivates an 8-hectare estate, including 4 hectares within the Gigondas appellation at around 500 metres altitude. The steep, north-east facing vineyards benefit from cooling influences that preserve freshness, while limestone, marl and clay soils produce wines of remarkable finesse and structure. Farmed according to certified organic principles with biodynamic practices, the estate promotes biodiversity, soil health and low-impact viticulture. In the cellar, hand-harvested fruit is vinified with minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts and restrained use of sulphur to express the character of the terroir. Careful ageing completes elegant, vibrant wines that combine concentration and purity.
Tasting Notes
This is a blend of Grenache and Syrah from some of the highest altitude terraced vineyards in the Southern Rhone Valley at 500m, just under the Dentelles de Montmirail. This wine is carefully hand harvested on steep vineyards, before spending 3 days in a cold preferment maceratiion. Spontaneous fermentation in steel with maturation split between 600l second use oak barrels and steel 50/50 for 12 months. Fresh fruit of strawberry, cherry and pomegranate, with an aromatic floral character. Rich on the palate with earthy, savoury and black pepper flavours, this is a typical Gigondas.
Food
Pairs with roast lamb, hearty braised beef or game, or with hard cheeses.
