At Ellis Wines, sustainability and ESG principles are central to the way we operate. As a certified B Corp, we are committed to driving positive environmental and social impact throughout our business and supply chain. We work closely with producers who share our values and continually seek ways to reduce our environmental footprint while supporting our customers in making more sustainable choices.

Our Sales, Event & Contract Catering Account Manager, Katy Rickards, recently attended Bartlett Mitchell's ESG Roadshow, where she joined industry experts to discuss the impact of climate change on the wine supply chain and the role ESG plays within the wine industry.

“I recently had the pleasure of taking part in Bartlett Mitchell’s ESG Roadshow, where I was interviewed by their Head of Wine, Marie Phallipou, about the impact of climate change on the wine supply chain and the role ESG plays within the wine industry.

Sustainability in wine is something I feel incredibly passionate about, and I always enjoy the opportunity to share knowledge and help people better understand the challenges and opportunities facing our industry.

One topic that comes up time and again is how consumers can make more sustainable wine choices. Many wine drinkers tell me they feel overwhelmed by the information available and aren't sure where to start.

One simple and effective step is to choose wine in a lighter-weight bottle. You don't need technical expertise or even a set of scales to do this. If you're choosing between two bottles, simply pick the one that feels lighter in your hand. The weight of the glass bottle, combined with the transportation required to move it around the world, represents one of the biggest contributors to the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine.

Of course, the picture is more complex than that, and we must also consider factors such as the carbon intensity involved in producing different types of packaging. However, choosing lighter bottles is an easy and practical place to start.

It was also a pleasure to present alongside Marcel from Bella Barista. Hearing about the parallel challenges facing the coffee supply chain, as well as learning more about their Regenerative Organic Certification initiatives, provided valuable insight into how different sectors are approaching sustainability and environmental responsibility.”
