Region

Volcanic soils and a maritime influence combine to impart a distinct elegance and mineral character upon the island`s wines. Notable for its range of local varieties with Nero d`Avola and Nerello Mascalese making reliable, fleshy red wines, whilst Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia yield surprisingly well balanced and flavourful white wines. You will also find the more recognised grapes of Syrah and Chardonnay performing really well in this warm Mediterranean climate. However, it is the uniquely rich and mineral influenced dessert wines that are perhaps Sicily`s greatest contribution to the wine world, from Marsala to Moscato di Pantelleria and Malvasia.

Producer

Located on the north slopes of Mount Etna, within the prestigious Calderara Scottana area, between 600 - 1000 meters of altitude. SRC own about 11 hectares of mostly old vineyards from 50 to 100 years old, planted on both historic, and more recent (1981) lava flows. A lifelong wine enthusiast (with a background in construction and motorsports, winning the Italian GT Championship aboard a Ferrari F40) Rori together with his wife Cinzia and daughter Sandra, founded SRC in 2012. They follow tradition in the vineyard with work done manually, respecting the natural cycle, and they allow the natural yeasts to ferment the grapes spontaneously in the winery for the best expression of their land.
Tasting Notes
These vines are planted on the Northern side of Etna in the Calderara Sottana area. The blend is mostly made up of Nerello Mascalese with a smaller amount of Nerello Cappuccio and Minnella Rossa at some of the estates highest altitude vineyards up to 800 meters in elevation. The grapes are destemmed and vinified with ambient yeasts in concrete and used large 15hl barrels, where the wine matures and softens for 8 months, with a further 8 months in bottle. There is a slightly wild character with ripe red cherry fruits combined with cranberries and smokey, mineral notes. The tannins are chalky and well knitted into the wine’s structure.
