We continue our producer spotlight for 31 Days of German Wine with one of the more recent additions to our German portfolio, the fantastic Weingut Greiner.

Owned and run by Maximilian Greiner and his wife Anna, this artisanal estate is based in Baden, in a unique microclimate in Markgräflerland - at the foothills of Hochblauen, one of the highest peaks in the southern Black Forest - the birthplace of Black Forest Gateau!

Baden is Germany’s southernmost wine region - a long, narrow strip of vineyards nestled between the Black Forest and the Rhine River. It stretches over 400 km from north to south, running parallel with Alsace on the opposite bank. After the Ice Age, the meadow forests along the Upper Rhine in Baden were among the first areas where wild vines began to grow again.

Weingut Greiner released its first vintage in 2017. Max took over the family estate in 2018 after the sudden passing of his father and immediately began converting the vineyards to fully organic farming. Driven by a commitment to sustainability and long-term soil health, he embraced biodynamic viticulture, believing that truly great wines start with living soils and resilient vines. The transition was significant, but Max's philosophy is that biodynamic cultivation enhances both complexity and authentic expression of terroir.

The estate’s unique terroir - benefiting from light Föhn winds and soils rich in Jurassic limestone and volcanic rock - offers the ideal foundation for fresh, fine, and delicate wines. Max works with a natural, low-intervention approach, using an original Champagne basket press to extract juice gently, allowing spontaneous fermentation without filtration. All wines are fermented with native yeasts, undergo malolactic conversion, and spend extended time on the lees for added texture and balance.

Today, Max and Anna produce exceptional wines with a modern, elegant edge. We primarily stock their Spätburgunder and Chardonnay, which consistently impress. Their latest release is particularly exciting, Anna, a trained artist, has designed a range of hand-painted labels for her debut wine, Encanto, a beautiful reflection of both artistic and winemaking talent.
