Region
If you have never tried an English wine before – well now is your opportunity. The vineyards of England are generally located in the warmer southern counties where the milder influences of the gulf stream have an important effect, as our northern hemisphere vineyards need a longer cooler growing season than in Europe to produce top quality grapes. More than 500 vineyards are in production across the UK and bottled annual sales has reached 3 million bottles, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Bacchus the most planted varieties.
Producer
Rathfinny Estate is one of England’s leading sparkling wine producers, established in 2010 by Mark and Sarah Driver on a 600-acre estate in Sussex. Located on the South Downs near Alfriston, the vineyards benefit from a cool maritime climate and chalk-rich soils, well suited to traditional-method sparkling wine. Rathfinny focuses on the classic Champagne varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with sustainability central to its approach. Vineyard biodiversity is encouraged through wildflower planting, cover crops and careful management of the surrounding landscape. Wines are made with precision and extended ageing, producing elegant, complex sparkling wines with the freshness, fine texture and mineral character associated with Sussex.
Tasting Notes
Rathfinny Classic Cuvée is a sophisticated English sparkling wine from the Sussex estate, showcasing the freshness and elegance of the South Downs. A blend led by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier that spends 54 months on the lees. It displays aromas of crisp apple, lemon and white peach alongside subtle biscuit and brioche notes. The palate is bright and finely textured, with a delicate mousse, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish.
Food
Ideal as an aperitif or paired with seafood, shellfish and lighter canapes.
