Region

Wellington is a wine-producing district in the Western Cape of South Africa, 40 miles from Cape Town. The rolling hills and valleys of the area provide a wide range of suitable sites for wine growers where fine, elegant examples of Pinotage and Chenin Blanc are made. The vineyard area is 35 miles inland from the Atlantic coast which provides cooling winds to the region and helps to regulate the temperatures during the hot, summer months.

Producer

Nestled in the Cape Mountain ranges with a unique variety of terroir and microclimates giving Doolhof the ability to grow a range of varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz. A combination of Malmesbury shale, homogenic Glenrosa and Clovelly soils ensure that the roots are able to descend to four metres or beyond. Each variety is planted on soil it is best suited to, allowing successful and optimum ripeness of grapes. The white varietals are planted on the eastern slopes of the Groenberg, which allow the grapes cooler days and less direct sunlight.
Tasting Notes
The Riviersteen Chenin Blanc has a vibrant fragrance of peaches, citrus, pears and slight hints of sweet oak from 8 months spent in French and Hungarian oak. These wonderfully fresh characters follow through beautifully on the palate and ensures a long and well-balanced finish. Grown in Limietberg in Paarl, the grapes are carefully chosen from 3 specific rows in the vineyard, handpicked and sorted to ensure only the best grapes go into the wines.
Food
Pairs well with creamy penne pasta with mushrooms and Gammon.
