Region

The Languedoc is a vast region stretching across much of the south and Mediterranean with large volume of IGP wine within the distinct areas of l`Aude, Gard and Hérault and also well known appellations such as Minervois, Corbières, Pic Saint Loup and Fitou. It’s history dates back to the Greeks and Romans as well as monastaries in the Middle Ages. The Languedoc experiences Mediterranean climate with high levels of sunshine and warmth with low rainfall which are all favourable for grape growing. A wide range of grape varieties are grown including Syrah, Grenache and Carignan and the local variety piquepoul making a range of styles of red, white and rosé wines.

Producer

Established in 1967 in Arzens in the Aude, Les Vignobles Foncalieu is a union of cooperative wineries rooted in the heart of the Languedoc. Over 800 growers work everyday to bring the best from the terroirs from Languedoc- Roussillon, to produce exceptional wines. The name Foncalieu is made up of letters of villages in the region of l`Aude - Fonties de Aude, Capendu - Alzonne - Montolieu. Foncalieu are HVE certified, they advocate strongly for biodiversity. The trees and hedges around some of their vineyards provide shelter for bats, which feed on the insects that are harmful to the vines. A virtuous circle.
Tasting Notes
A hidden gem from this rarely encountered single varietal, lovely dry and richly textured palate, it is impressively fragrant and spicy with notes of peach and pear with aniseed notes. It is a wine made to be enjoyed young and fresh, with a mid-bodied palate rich with flavours of acacia, peach and greengages balanced by a dry mineral finish. It is made protectively in steel tanks to ensure the fresh character of Grenache comes through, with 5 months on lees to give a rich texture that balances the flavours.
Food
Excellent as an aperitif and served with globe artichokes, Asian stirfry vegetables, grilled fish and fresh goat`s cheese.
