Region

Haut-Medoc is the large southern section of the greater Medoc district of Bordeaux in south-western France and also the name of the appellation that covers the vineyards here. It accounts for two-thirds of the Medoc peninsula and produces more fine wine per acre than almost anywhere else in the world. The soil in the Haut-Médoc region is mainly composed of thick gravel layers that have been swept down river over time and now sit on a base of heavy clay. The warm, well-drained gravel terraces provide ideal growing conditions for the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Producer

Cantemerle is a 5ème cru classé, located in the appellation of Haut Medoc. It’s woodland setting is amongst the most beautiful of any chateau in the Medoc. Historically, it was the last entry in the 1855 Classification; in fact it was something of a late entry... Its viticultural history can actually be dated back further than this to 1354, but at this time the estate was better known for other forms of agriculture, particularly cattle and cereals. Situated just to the south of Margaux, Cantemerle is currently making excellent value, classical wines that reward aging but as is the modern way can be accessed in their youth.
Tasting Notes
A classy Cabernet-Sauvignon-based claret from the classed 5th growth Château Cantemerle. Produced from mature rootstock on well-drained gravelly soils. 12 months of ageing in medium toast French barrels which are 40% new. Cassis and cedar aromas are followed by a wealth of sleek blueberry and dark cherry fruit over a background of silky tannins.
Food
A perfect accompaniment with rich meat dishes that are roasted or braised such as veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game.
