Region
Saint Julien is located between Margaux and Pauillac appelations, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The vineyards lie on a bed of sedimentary rock. The subsoil is surprisingly complex and is the reason why Saint-Julien wines vary so much in character. The grape varieties grown under this appellation are the same as those found throughout the Médoc area, i.e. predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carménère.
Producer
The family home of Anthony Barton, Chateau Langoa Barton, oversees a small estate of just 15ha with a dominant planting of Cabernet Sauvignon on the Medoc pebbles. The chateau is pictured on the label of Chateau Leoville Barton, the sister estate to Langoa, which is also made here. Both wines are made with meticulous care to preserve the best of traditional methods and the distinct subtilties in character of the two wines. The origins of the 45ha Leoville Barton estate date back to 1826, when Hugh Barton purchased part of the big Leoville estate, hence the name. Seven generations of the family have continued to preserve the quality of this 45 hectare estate.
Tasting Notes
Anthony Barton`s second growth is always a top quality Bordeaux of classic proportions. Structured, Cabernet Sauvignon dominated wines are produced here that are serious, controlled and pure, with expressive dark fruits and delicate, velvety tannins. The 50 hectare vineyard is planted 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Always the epitome of Saint Julien and the ultimate `Englishman`s Claret`.
Food
The perfect pair for roasted meets like lamb, venison, duck or beef.
