Region

The Romans planted the first vineyards along the Mosel river and the city of Trier around the second century. Today, this region is known for its steep slopes overlooking the rivers, on which the vineyards are planted. The steep slate and schist soil vineyards on the banks of the Mosel are almost exclusively planted with Riesling. This environment provides classic mineral and lime flavours from Riesling, allied to intense flavour and acidity.

Producer

The Loosen family has been growing Riesling and producing wine in the Mosel valley for over 200 years. The current owner, Ernst “Erni” Loosen, assumed ownership in 1988, after finishing a degree in archaeology ,with acute focus on one thing. his vines. With the good fortune to inherit vines averaging sixty years old in some of the Mosel’s best terroir, he’s reduced yields, moved to organic farming and placed great emphasis on the vineyard site itself. Loosen wines are perhaps some of the most iconic in the region. Today, Erni is one of the most iconic and influential winemakers in the world.
Tasting Notes
Erdener Treppchen means `The Little Staircase of Erden`, called this because the vineyard is so steep that long ago, stone steps were built into the hillside to enable workers to reach the vines. A rich wine with an oppulent nose of peach, lime, marzipan and smoke. In the mouth, it is full of honeydew melon, ripe peach, pineapple, lime and a distinct minerality from the iron rich soil of the vineyard. The finish is pure and long with the mineral notes lingering on the palate.
Food
Perfect with a green thai curry and other Asian cuisines.
