Summer Chilling: Why we are Sticking with Red
If you enjoy red wine, but think it’s not appropriate for hot weather, think again!
Many red wines can be greatly enjoyed when lightly chilled, between about 9-12°C in warmer seasons. Best suited for lighter style reds, including Gamay or Pinot Noir, but particularly those with a more fruit forward profile, such as those that have undergone carbonic maceration, showing character of bright red fruits, and a hint of candy notes. Whereas for full bodied and tannic styles I think more moderate temperature of 16-18°C suits the profile better for a softer mouthfeel as it allows you to better perceive the different fruit and savoury characters.
It is very common across warmer Europe to chill reds, particularly in Spain and Portugal, where even the heavier reds can often be served chilled. Some even enjoy a glass with an ice cube, however I personally would not enjoy the dilution of the wine, as it impacts the overall character, so I would say fridge-cooled is the best.
However, in the UK it is uncommon to see reds kept in the fridges, but I hope to see this change, as I believe it is a great way to enjoy a red, and allows for another refreshing wine option in the summertime!
