Region

The demarcated region for Port wine follows the steep, winding river of the Douro. The region for centuries has had a history of viticulture created in harsh conditions, constantly flighting with the natural geography of the land. The region was founded in 1756 by the then Prime Minister, making the Douro region one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world. Beginning 75km east of the coastal city of Oporto at Barqueiros and stretching to the town of Barca d`Alva at the Portuguese - Spanish border. The region is then divided into three regions; Baixo Corgo (lower Corgo), Cima Corgo (Upper Corgo) and Douro Superior. Each sub region is separated by natural frontiers which gives them their own distinctive style and therefore allowing the Douro to produce a multitude of styles of Port wine.

Producer

Port houses are steeped in tradition, nowhere more so than at Fonseca Guimaraens. Port wines have been made by the same family since the house was founded in 1822. Today with winemaker David Guimaraens at the helm and as part of the Taylors group, it has become one of the leading wine producers in the world. The house style is for rich, raisiny and luscious dark berry fruit, with a fine rounded quality but a good structure that allows the ports to mature for decades. Highly rated by the worlds esteemed wine critics.
Tasting Notes
Fonseca Bin nº27 was created over a century ago for family consumption, and only released commercially in 1972. It is produced primarily from wines from Fonseca’s own quintas in the Cima Corgo and thus shows an exceptional quality and consistency from year to year. Blended from reserve wines selected for their superb fruit character and depth of colour, it’s well-knit structure, rich, velvety full body and luscious blackcurrant and cherry flavours, also dominant in the bouquet, finish on an intense, lingering note.
Food
Cheese of course, but also with fruit based desserts.
