Region

Bierzo is a wine region in the northwest of Castilla y Leon, Spain, close to the region`s borders with Galicia to the west and Asturias to the north. The Bierzo viticultural area consists of two parts. Bierzo Alto (high Bierzo), a mineral-rich and mountainous terrain where terraced vineyards are sewn into the slopes, and Bierzo Bajo (low Bierzo), a wide and verdant plain. Bierzo`s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has a profound effect on its overall climate, and the soil types are very different to the rest of Castilla y Leon, with a predominance of slate and granite which favours Mencia Vines. The wines tend to be lighter and more refreshing.

Producer

Godelia was born at the end of 2009 as the dream of García Rodríguez family to develop the viticulture in El Bierzo and create value and a future for the region. Located in the Northwest of Spain, in the town of Pieros (Cacabelos,León), Godelia take on a commitment with the region recovering and taking care of the old Mencía, Godello and Doña Blanca vines to produce our wines. Responsible viticulture is key for the winery’s philosophy, working with vegetation covers in the soils, producing an active soil with microbial life. Godelia almost owns 50 hectares of vineyards with the age of the vines ranging between 25 to 100 years old and they settled down on slate, pebbles, quartzes and clays soils.
Tasting Notes
This is complex and classic Mencia made from selected grapes from a plot of south facing centenarian vines located at higher altitude (800 metres) on steep slatey slopes. The wine was aged in french oak barrels for 16 months. There are intense, ripe, red fruit notes together with a metalic minerality and fine spicey nuances of the oak which is rich and well integrated and persistant on the finish. The real character of the terroir comes through in this wine.
Food
Ideal with roasted meats and game.
