Region
Penedes is the coastal Catalan region in north eastern Spain around the vibrant city of Barcelona. The region is dominated by the Pyrenees to the north, which forms a narrow coastal strip. The mild climate is influenced by the cooling Mediterranean, with a more continental and hotter climate further inland, where the vineyards are affected by the altitude, which afford cooler climatic influences. The region is most famed for producing Cava sparkling wine, meaning `cellar` in Catalan.
Producer
Can Valles is a family estate ran by Jordi Valles and his wife Vicky, with the help of their daughter Victoria. Their origins are a long history, dating back to 1486 which is 22 generations of winemaking. Can Valles are based in the region of Penedès, which is located in Catalonia, 60km south west of Barcelona. The mountains of the region look on to the estate which sits in a basin between the foothills and the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards sit at 400m above sea level and soils are calcareous, with a mix of clay and well-draining stony terrain. Rainfall of 550mm per year allows dry farming for water retention. The core philosophy of the family starts in the vineyards with biodynamic principles, all vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably with some being DEMETER certified. Winemaker Anna Baqués practices low intervention, using native grapes to the region to craft delicious, gastronomic lead wines.
Tasting Notes
This easy drinking white is made of a blend of Xarel-lo (pronounced charel-lo) and Chardonnay combining fresh bright fruit and texture. It shows pleasant notes of fresh citrus, pear and apple on the nose, and on the palate gives silky velvety texture to complement the lively acidity and fresh flavours. This wine certainly doesn`t tire as its sensational moreish character means you can enjoy alone or with food.
Food
This wine is perfect to drink alone as an apperitive or with light dishes such as seafood or an asian dish.
