Region

Volcanic soils and a maritime influence combine to impart a distinct elegance and mineral character upon the island`s wines. Notable for its range of local varieties with Nero d`Avola and Nerello Mascalese making reliable, fleshy red wines, whilst Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia yield surprisingly well balanced and flavourful white wines. You will also find the more recognised grapes of Syrah and Chardonnay performing really well in this warm Mediterranean climate. However, it is the uniquely rich and mineral influenced dessert wines that are perhaps Sicily`s greatest contribution to the wine world, from Marsala to Moscato di Pantelleria and Malvasia.

Producer

Born from a partnership between Cantina Orsogna cooperative and BioGaia, a biodynamic Sicilian farmer collective. LunaGaia labels are a visual homage to L`Opera dei Pupi Siciliana (the Sicilian Puppet Opera), a Sicilian storytelling tradition & UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The wines tell the story of the Italian Epic poem "Orlando Furioso" by Ludovico Ariosto.
Tasting Notes
Zibibbo is the Sicilian name for Muscat of Alexandria and is one of the rarer grapes in the world with a long history that dates back 5,000 years, cultivated in ancient Egypt and brought to Sicily by the Phoenicians. The front label shows the fight between Orlando and Rinaldo, both in love with Princess Angela in the "Orlando Furioso" epic. Ambient yeasts are used to allow the grape to express its own very perfumed character. Mesmerizing aromatics of white blossom, honeysuckle and mediterranean herbs found in abundance on the nose. An interesting palate full of ripe peach, candied orange peel, hints of subtle mango with a savoury saline note on the finish, beautifully balanced with a crisp acidity that stands up to the fruit intensity.
Food
Pair with asian stir-fries, sushi or scallops in a cream sauce.
