Region

The mountainous Abruzzo region is on the east coast of central Italy, which is south of Marche and north of Puglia. The region has two distinct areas with the hillside vineyards having warm continental climate with cooling from the Apennine mountains and then the flatter coastal zone which has a warm Mediterranean climate. Abruzzo is home to the red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, white Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC. Abruzzo mostly produces wines from Montepulciano but also Sangiovese, Pecorino and Passerina as well as more international varietals such as Chardonnay.

Producer

The company was born as a retailer in 1928 in the Veneto region for sales of wines in casks and demi-johns to restaurants and small retailers. The company is now run by the third generation and from their roots in Veneto they now have a portfolio of wines produced in some of Italy’s finest regions. Botter pride themselves on their focus of sustainability, going beyond reducing emissions, production of waste and non-renewable energy usage and taking a responsible approach for the whole production chain.
Tasting Notes
Intense purple in colour with intense aromas of blackberries and cherries. The palate is round and rich with notes of ripe berry fruit, sweet black cherries and a hint of herbaceous notes. 24 months ageing, at least 9 of which in wooden casks, result in a touch of liquorice and a distinctive spicy character. Rich tannins support the palate which has a long and fruity finish. Age in bottle allows the wine to open further for more complexity and suppleness.
Food
Serve with pastas with tomato sauces, roasts, grilled meats, spicy salami, mature hard cheeses.
