Region

In the heart of central Italy, Tuscany is one of the most prestigious and celebrated wine growing regions in the world. These gentle rolling hills are not only home to Italy`s culture and language, but also to the grand wine estates of Chianti to the north and the more modest yet superb estates of Montalcino and Montepulciano in the south. Sangiovese is the red grape variety that unites Tuscany`s wine producing districts in its various distinct clones. However, planting of international grape varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, have given rise to the world renowned `Super Tuscan` wines.

Producer

Castello Vicchiomaggio is situated in the heart of the Chianti region, close to the historical town of Greve in Chianti. The origins of the Castello and wine making can be traced back to the 5th century, and the present owners, John and Paola Matta, are dedicated to maintaining this tradition. They are certified sustainable which takes into account activities in the winery and the vineyard. The most prominent vine is Sangiovese, which is the fundamental grape for Chianti Classico, but they also have indigenous grapes such as Canaiolo and Colorino, as well as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes
The Classico district is the heart of Chianti, with vineyards around the market town of Greve, south of Florence. The Vicchiomaggio estate makes typical vibrant Classico Riserva, from the `Petri` vineyard, which is over 20 years old, producing low yields and excellent grape quality. It is a full-bodied wine with good fresh black fruits, a touch of vanilla from oak ageing and a bittersweet finish. It has refined tannins that are silky smooth, from both the Cabernet and Sangiovese spending time separately in French oak.
Food
Ideal with game, red meats and cheeses.
