Region

The Mâconnais district lies in the south of the Burgundy wine region in France, west of the River Saône. It takes its name from the town of Mâcon. It is best known as a source of good value white wines made from the Chardonnay grape. The wines from Pouilly-Fuissé are particularly sought-after with 22 Premier Cru climats which all benefit from being planted on the Fuissé ampitheatre which gains the best sun and good soil drainage. Almost all the wine made in the Mâconnais is white wine. A little Pinot Noir is made into red Mâcon but only for local consumption.

Producer

Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue are third generation proprietors at the Moulin du Pont, their winery is a converted mill in the Mâcon region of southern Burgundy. This dynamic family business is a specialist in the wines of Pouilly Fuissé, Saint-Véran and other Mâconnais whites where the chalk and limestone hills give way to the volcanic slopes of Beaujolais to the north of Lyon. Their production is small, but the quality is of the highest level, indeed amongst the top three or four of all producers of Pouilly Fuissé. They are favourites in many of the Michelin starred restaurants in France and have an international reputation.
Tasting Notes
Jean Auvigue produces Pouilly Fuissé of the highest quality with vibrant Chardonnay fruit. A blend of both stainless steel and oak cask fermentation helps to capture the classic terroir and delicious rich ripe flavours that are unique to these vineyards. The palate is full and round, bursting with fresh flavours of stone fruit and citrus notes with a clean mineral finish. The time in oak adds complexity with notes of vanilla and sweet spice which balance perfectly with the rich apple and peach notes.
Food
An ideal partner to New England clam chowder, salmon en croute and asparagus quiche.
