Region
The Pays Nantais is the area around the city of Nantes on the Atlantic coast of west France where the Loire river enters the sea. The region covers an area about 90 kilometres (55 miles) from east to west, between neighbouring Anjou and the coastline. As such, it lies at the very western end of the wider Loire wine region. Most production results in crisp, light, white wine styles which is largely due to the climatic influences of the Atlantic on the region. The most famous of style is unquestionably Muscadet, whose Melon de Bourgogne grape variety dominates plantings. Muscadet is produced in several different appellations, but led by Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine where the “sur lie” production method is typical.
Producer
The vineyards of the Domaine des Herbauges are a part of the estate of the Chateau de la Senaigerie, bordering the shores of the beautiful Lac de Grandlieu. Set up in 1864, it is now run and owned by Jérôme Choblet who is committed to creating wines of the highest quality using traditional French winemaking techniques. His Muscadet sur lie is one of intense, almost exotic fruit and clearly shows the character and quality so often missing in this region.
Tasting Notes
Grown at Domaine Herbauges, this `old vine` Chardonnay is super fresh and lively with a lovely twist of lemon acidity. A beautifully unoaked and fresh Chardonnay which is balanced and dry. The palate is full of white peach and apple flavours and develops exotic fruits such as pineapple, banana and quince on the palate. A good structure with a fresh acidity leads into a lingering finish.
Food
Seafood platter and oysters. Great as an aperitif or with fish and poultry such as goose in sauce.
