Region

Winemaking in the Czech Republic can be traced back to Roman times as archaeological excavations have unearthed viticulture and winemaking artifacts. There are two wine growing regions defined in Czech law; Moravia and Bohemia. Moravia is responsible for 96% of all production and borders Austria. The cool continental climate here is comparable to Pfalz and is well suited to aromatic white varieties.

Producer

Sonberk was established in 2003 and is situated just west of the small wine growing town of Hustopece in the heart of Moravia. Their name derives from `Sonnberg` which refers to the south facing aspect of the slopes on which their 45 hectares of vines grow, looking onto the Thaya river which runs through the region. Winemakers and oenologists Oldrich Drapal and Roman Slouk practice sustainable viticulture with a range of varieties such as Palava, Riesling, Traminer and Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes
This Czech wine is made from Palava, a crossing of Muller-Thurgau and Roter Traminer which was created in the Czech region of Moravia in the 1950s. This wine is a pale lemon colour with white peaches and floral aromas on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with a pronounced ripe fruity character and notes of apple, apricot and honeysuckle. A short period of the wine lying on its fine lees gives the palate complex texture and a lovely, very smooth finish.
Food
A perfect pair for lightly spiced asian cuisine or fish, chicken and rice dishes.
