Region

Located 160km North of Cape Town, the Robertson Valley lies in the folds of the Riviersonderend and Langeberg Mountains where the Breede River meanders towards the Cape`s southern coastline. The chilly southern ocean breezes are funneled up the valley and give cooling respite to the vines throughout the growing season. Quite high concentrations of lime are found in the soil and this makes the area exceptionally fine for white grape varieties.

Producer

De Wetshof is a third generation wine estate in South Africa’s Robertson Wine Valley, where wine has been made for over 150 years. The estate was bought by South African wine pioneer, Danie de Wet’s father, Johann de Wet in 1950. Johann Senior saw the potential for agriculture and developed the farm to a premium producer of fruits and livestock in the region. Danie took over from his father and became the pioneer of Chardonnay in South Africa in the mid-seventies when he imported the first planting material of this noble variety. From the 1980s onwards, this became De Wetshof`s major focus and today, five decades later, it is still the pivot around which everything at De Wetshof revolves. Today the estate is managed by brothers, Johann Junior (CEO) who looks after the viniculture and marketing and the day to day operations and Peter (CFO) who handles production and finance. On De Wetshof the firm belief prevails that you cannot determine where you are going unless you know where you have come from. This is why the history of De Wetshof Estate’s vineyards plays a profound role in determining present and future wine quality and underscoring the estate’s reputation for excellence. Since the early 1970’s meticulous records have been kept of each vineyard’s reaction to soil-types, irrigation and the vagaries of climate, as well as their development and progress over the years. The vineyards are thus vinified separately during the wine-making process, the winemakers having a clear understanding of what the fruit of each vineyard’s labour is going to deliver during a specific year. The commitment to site-specific vineyard management and winemaking has been an integral part of the De Wetshof ethos from the outset and remains a vital non-negotiable aspect of all the Estate’s wines. Environmentally sustainable and social responsibility have always been at the core of De Wetshof’s business philosophy. The results of various recent audits pertaining to international requirements for safety in our production systems - as well as practices conforming to the most stringent requirements of environmental sustainability – underscore De Wetshof’s commitment to a holistically responsibility of ethically and environmentally integrated wine production.
Tasting Notes
Danie de Wet has established a worldwide reputation for his estate white wines from the Robertson region east of Cape Town. It is matured for two months on the lees to give an aromatic yet robust, fruity and complex wine. It is a classic aromatic Sauvignon with notes of asparagus and greengage and lime on the finish.
