About Vergelegen Wine Estate

Established in 1700, Vergelegen is a globally celebrated wine estate in Somerset West, South Africa, it is known for its award-winning wines, historic gardens, and sustainable viticulture. With a strong focus on sustainability and innovation, the estate has garnered international acclaim and numerous awards, solidifying its position as a leader in the South African wine industry.

New winemaker

In 2022 after 35 years stewardship under André van Rensburg (1998-2022), the winemaking baton at Vergelegen was passed onto acclaimed winemaker, Luke O’Cuinneagain. Luke joined Vergelegen from Glenelly Estate in Stellenbosch, with initial experience gained at nearby Rustenburg Estate. He also learnt from international winemakers at Château de Fieuzal and Château Angelus in Bordeaux, Caves Robert Dietrich in Alsace, and Screaming Eagle in California.
 

Luke’s appointment followed a rigorous recruitment process over several months, selecting from a total of 29 applicants, including leading names in the industry. With Vergelegen's reputation for sustainability and crafting wines as naturally as possible, with minimal intervention, Luke’s expertise promises an exciting future for Vergelegen’s legacy of producing world-class wines.

Brand revitalisation

As part of its ongoing brand evolution, Vergelegen has also introduced a refreshed range of wine labels, reflecting the estate’s heritage and quality. The new designs blend classic and contemporary elements, showcasing the estate’s iconic architecture and vineyard landscapes to enhance recognition among UK wine lovers.
 

Drawing inspiration from the farm, its rich history, and the environmental ethos woven into its story, we crafted an evolution that feels true to the essence of this extraordinary property.
