Region

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county`s relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken. Sonoma Valley is located in the county`s southeastern corner, and effectively mirrors the shape and orientation of Napa Valley just across the Mayacamas Mountains. It encompasses Bennett Valley, Sonoma Mountain and the western half of Carneros – arguably California`s finest "cool-climate" terroir. The Sonoma Valley climate is famously blessed with cooling fog, which rolls in from San Pablo Bay in the summer months. When combined with cooling ocean breezes, this means that Sonoma Valley is sufficiently cool yet sufficiently sunny to create wines which are elegant, bright and intensley flavoured.

Producer

The Ridge Vineyards began in 1885 when Dr Perrone bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards, as well as constructing the winery out of native limestone.Ridge Vineyards is one of the most prestigeous wineries in California and is famous for the 1976 judgement of Paris where a panel of European experts judged the Ridge Monte Bello to be superior to some of Bordeaux`s finest wines.
Tasting Notes
Three Valleys is made from carefully blended parcels from a number of different vineyard sites in Sonoma. This is a blend representing different varieties; Zinfandel determines the wine`s varietal character, old vine Carignan contributes bright fruit and acidity and Petite Sirah adds depth of colour and firm tannins. Fermentation with native yeasts, followed by maturation in American Oak. Notes of toasty charred wood, strawberry jam, black tea and baking spices fill the bouquet. The palate is layered with black and blue berries, chocolate, cherries and garrigue herbs , followed by textured tannins and a very long finish.
Food
Ideal with pasta, spicy cuisine, pepper steak, roast meats and strong cheeses.
