Region

This region includes the southern Burgundian vineyards of Givry, Mercurey, Rully and Montagny which are all close to the town of Chalon just 30 minutes south of Beaune in the heart of Burgundy. Very rural and unspoilt these vineyards are planted with Chardonnay & Aligote for whites and Pinot Noir for reds. The soils are a mix of limestone, schist and clay, and when combined with a warmer climate than Burgundies from further North the wines have a fuller, riper character. These excellent wines generally offer attractive early drinking, that are often a great taste of `Classic Red & White Burgundy`.

Producer

Located in the heart of Burgundians Grands Crus, Olivier Chanzy’s house is situated at the heart of Meursault, in a wine growers building dating back to the 19th century in the town of Mazeray. Olivier is the son of the former owners of the Chanzy estate in Bouzeron, after several experiences around the world, Olivier decided to create his own project. The cellar is very modern designed for working on the wine as much as possible by gravity in order to avoid any mechanical intervention. Each appellation is carefully vinified and aged in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels for a period of 12 months for white wines and 18 months for red wines. Maison Olivier Chanzy is picking up an exciting reputation for crafting very high quality wines from the Cotes d`Or.
Tasting Notes
Producing the largest volume of wine in the Cote Challonaise, Mercurey has a reputation for fantastic quality and rich, fruity red wines. Chanzy takes the grapes for this Mercurey Rouge from limestone rich soils grown at an altitude of 250-300m. Lightly oaked in French barrels, this wine is deep in colour and shows rich cherry and raspberry notes on the nose. The oak aging helps to build structure and softens the tannins of the wine which are well integrated, leading through to a well-rounded fruit profile on the palate and a lasting finish.
Food
Will serve will with red meat dishes such as Boeuf Bourguigon or delicate cheeses.
