Region

Pauillac is renowned for being a source of quality Bordeaux wines, sitting on the left side of the Gironde River on the gravel beds. Here the vines have ideal drainage and riverside micro-climate enjoyed by the dominant varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Here the expression is richly concentrated blackcurrant and exotic, smoky fruit, which is softened with some Merlot and has added complexity with the minute addition of the dark inky Petit Verdot. Wines from Pauillac are known for their structure and concentration with great potential for ageing.

Producer

A superb 17th century property located south of the famous commune of Pauillac in the heart of the Medoc. The word `Puy` derives from the French word for `knoll` or `ridge`, and it is on a croupe of gravel that the original vineyard is located, supporting a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon vines, with smaller plots of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This chateau produces quintessential Pauillac wines, aristocratic, succulent and ripe, supported by noble tannins and lingering complex finish. The chateau is now owned by the Borie family of Ducru-Beaucaillou, who have modernized the estate, producing wines that have been way above expectation.
Tasting Notes
This is Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste’s second wine and reflects the quality of Grand Vin but in an elegant, younger style. Situated on the deep, course gravel plateau of Pauillac, these grapes are hand selected from 38-year-old vines. A long maceration is followed by ageing in French Barrique (45% new barrels) for 14 months. Supple dark fruits, licorice and spice notes are held by assertive but ripe tannins, that can be enjoyed when young but will also allow further maturation.
Food
A good match for fine cuts of beef, roast lamb, wild mushrooms, game including venison, boar or hare and well flavoured cheeses.
