Region

Wellington is a wine-producing district in the Western Cape of South Africa, 40 miles from Cape Town. The rolling hills and valleys of the area provide a wide range of suitable sites for wine growers where fine, elegant examples of Pinotage and Chenin Blanc are made. The vineyard area is 35 miles inland from the Atlantic coast which provides cooling winds to the region and helps to regulate the temperatures during the hot, summer months.

Producer

Nestled in the Cape Mountain ranges with a unique variety of terroir and microclimates giving Doolhof the ability to grow a range of varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz. A combination of Malmesbury shale, homogenic Glenrosa and Clovelly soils ensure that the roots are able to descend to four metres or beyond. Each variety is planted on soil it is best suited to, allowing successful and optimum ripeness of grapes. The white varietals are planted on the eastern slopes of the Groenberg, which allow the grapes cooler days and less direct sunlight.
Tasting Notes
The Morestand Chardonnay from Paarl has elegant aromas of citrus, apricots and pear which are gently supported by an intriguing flinty minerality. The palate is full and creamy with fresh acidity for a beautiful balanced wine. The oak has a delicious underlying presence and uplifts the fresh fruit characters. Grapes are grown in a deep rich Clovelly soil, and then handled carefully for extraction of fresh flavours followed by ageing in French oak for light oak notes and soft rich texture.
Food
Enjoy with a beautiful slow-braised pork belly with thai spice or a west coast cod over the coals with a fresh lemon-butter sauce.
