Region

Cape Agulhas is a wine-producing region on the most southern tip of South Africa, 110 miles (170km) from Cape Town. The Cape is the official meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and the distinctly maritime climate has a marked effect on the wines made here. Producers make the most of the range of soils to produce expressive and racy Sauvignon Blanc and elegant, cool-climate Shiraz which have become staple styles for this area.

Producer

Nestled between Elim and Cape Agulhas, and just 9km from the sea, lies the secluded Strandveld Vineyards. This wind swept winery derives its name from the belt of land which spans the tempestuous tip of Africas southernmost coastline. At almost 35 degrees below the equator, this part of the Cape is characterised by severe winds, billowing mist and below average temperatures. A unique combination of maritime climate and diverse soil types work together to create the terroir which distinguishes the wines of Strandveld Vineyards.
Tasting Notes
Strandveld’s Syrah is a lovely replication in style of the Northern Rhone, with a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. The wine is Aged in barrels for 18 months with thirty percent of that in new French oak. This full-bodied wine is layered with intense black fruit, peppery notes, cloves and hints of a floral note. A rich palate with firm tannins and well-integrated oak to support the intense black berry and savoury notes that extend in a long rich finish.
Food
Pairs well with roast leg of lamb, steak and chops, venison, osso bucco, barbecued spareribs, hamburgers and strong cheeses.
