Region

Saint-Émilion and Pomerol sit next to each other on the right bank of Bordeaux. Saint-Émilion is home to some of the most prestigious wines in the world such as Cheval Blanc and Angelus. Only red wine qualifies for the appellation and is predominately made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Pomerol is located in the east of the Bordeaux region, near Saint-Émilion. While most appellations are named after a village or town within their boundaries, Pomerol has no such epicentre. Pomerol is an 800ha gravel bank with boasts the famous names of Petrus and Le Pin and produces wines made predominantly out of Merlot.

Producer

In 1886, Mrs Marie-Amelie de Nabineau, friend of the owner at that time, M. Leydet, gave the name `De Valois` to the estate. Interestingly, since that time a woman has always inherited the property. This tiny estate only covers some 7 hectares, consisting of 30 year old vines, and situated on the gravelly hill of Pomerol. In addition there are some plots from the south of Pomerol, where gravel soils are mixed with sand.
Tasting Notes
A beautiful Pomerol. This has intense raisiny richness from a blend of 77% Merlot that is balanced by a backbone of 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Cabernet Franc. Lower yielding vignes give intense rich fruit and lower volumes which are beautifully enhanced by aging in new oak barrique. Subtle flavours of plum, red berry and liquorice on the palate are nicely balanced with long and complex soft tannins.
Food
Perfect with roasted game.
