Region

Touraine, as a region, includes the spectrum of wines from fresh, well defined varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay and Malbec to Vouvray. It offers dry, sweet and sparkling white wines made from Chenin Blanc and the regions of Chinon and Bourgueil for red and rosé. The red wines of Touraine are largely produced from Cabernet Franc. Recent warm vintages and improved viticultural practices have resulted in many surprisingly concentrated yet supple red wines.

Producer

The estate, certified Ecocert and Demeter, is cultivated to biodynamic guidelines, respecting the environment. Clos des Quarterons is a 37 hectare family run estate and the sixth generation of the Amirault family, Agnes and Xavier are now in charge. The domaine plants Cabernet Franc and has been joined by just over a hectare of Chenin Blanc, planted on gravel and siliceous soils that trap the heat of the sun.
Tasting Notes
Le Fondis vineyard is in close proximity to the Loire river with a southern exposure, this gives it a specific microclimate unique to this area. The winemaking process is a very `hands off` affair; the grapes are put straight into demi-muis (500L oak barrels) and fermentation is through the natural yeasts only - nothing is added. The resulting wine is complex with mature red fruits, spicy, earthy notes and a mineral character from the deep gravel over clay soils. Very long on the finish with an elegant acidity.
Food
Drink with roast or grilled lamb, pork, casseroles, game birds and matured cheeses.
