Region

Volcanic soils and a maritime influence combine to impart a distinct elegance and mineral character upon the island`s wines. Notable for its range of local varieties with Nero d`Avola and Nerello Mascalese making reliable, fleshy red wines, whilst Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia yield surprisingly well balanced and flavourful white wines. You will also find the more recognised grapes of Syrah and Chardonnay performing really well in this warm Mediterranean climate. However, it is the uniquely rich and mineral influenced dessert wines that are perhaps Sicily`s greatest contribution to the wine world, from Marsala to Moscato di Pantelleria and Malvasia.

Producer

The winery is located in Messina, run by oenologist Piero Colosi, who with his father Peter, oversee all aspects of winemaking. They have been producing the Malvasia delle Lipari since 1987 with grapes from their 7 hectare farm in Lipari, a small island in the Eolian Archipelago which is noted for its exposure and the volcanic nature of the soil which is particularly good for vine cultivation. The establishment of the vineyard has been done `terraces` style with each terrace finished off by a old dry stone wall. The winery was finally finished in 2004 where total production is less than 100,000 bottles across all varietals.
Tasting Notes
This wine is the outcome of careful selection of Zibibbo grapes (a local Muscat variety), cultivated from grapes on the north east of Sicily grown on the volcanic soils of Mt Etna. These are lightly dried after harvesting concentrating the natural sugars in the grapes. Sweet floral aromas and a natural fresh acidity keep the wine lively and balanced. A distinct mineral character combined with ripe fig and almonds provide plenty of flavour.
Food
Pear Tarte Tatin or Italian cheeses.
