New Duty Rates: August 2023

Wine bottles

Dear Customer

Following the Chancellors Budget on 15th March 2023 the Wine and Hospitality industry are preparing for the upcoming change to alcohol duty.

These will officially change on 1st August 2023. These changes mean that the higher the alcohol by volume (ABV) of wine, the higher the new excise will be. All wine, be it still, sparkling or fortified between 8.5% and 22% will be taxed at the same rate, but now based on the ABV.

  • Still wines, within 11.5% and 14.5% will see an increase of £0.44 per 75cl bottle.
  • Fortified wines, 15% to 20% will see an increase ranging from £0.34 to £1.30 per 75cl bottle.

There is some good news.

  • Sparkling wines within 11.5% to 14.5% will see a reduction of £0.19 per 75cl bottle.
  • Sparkling wines at 11% will see a reduction of £0.50 per 75cl bottle.

Please refer to the summary which you can download for your reference here.

These changes are comprehensive and complicated, so we have decided that we will have to implement them late on Friday 28th July.

Thus, any orders received after 2pm Friday 28th July will incorporate the new excise (orders processed prior to this but for delivery Monday 31st will be invoiced on 28th July and will be at the existing excise rates. No change to present prices).
