Region
The Southern Rhone is home to many famous appellations with a great variety of soils and microclimates, though in general sees ideal growing conditions that are warm and dry, with the Mistral wind proving a defining feature. Grenache forms the backbone of southern Rhône blends, including Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. With a range of varieties grown, the region sees a range of styles produced from quality red and white wines to the aromatic dessert wine Muscat de Beaumes de Venise.
Producer
Domaine des Amouriers is one of the most highly rated stars of the Vacqueyras appellation. Vacqueyras is one of the 16 villages in the Rhône Valley permitted to use the village name. This small, dynamic domaine produces a wonderful Vacqueyras from Syrah and Grenache grapes. The name of the domaine `Amouriers` is the provencal word for `mûrier` = mulberry, referring to the trees growing in the fields of the domain at the time when silk was an important source of income in the area.
Tasting Notes
This Provençal herb scented spicy Southern Rhône comes from one of the rising stars of the village of Vacqueyras. It is a blended from 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, vinified for maximum extraction and retention of black cherry, plum and spicy white pepper characters. The wine is rich, robust and warm with fruitiness and smoky bouquet lingering on the palate.
Food
The perfect winter warmer serve with sausage or venison casserole.
