UK Market Update
Keeping our fingers on the pulse of the UK trade is a key element of the friendly and personal service we pride ourselves on here at Ellis Wines.
2018 is shaping up to be an interesting year with restricted supply from many countries, particularly some key regions of Europe where frost last spring was a massive problem. As pay growth spent most of 2017 lagging behind inflation for the first time in a number of years, people have been eating and drinking out less.
The good news is that when they are going out, people are looking for more interesting wines and they are willing to pay a premium for it.
Trending up for us at the moment are:
Provence Rose (+52% value, +44% vol)
English wine (sparkling and still)
Central & Southern Italy
Premium Loire Valley
USA and Canada (Canada from a small base)
Hungary and Czech Republic (both from small bases but we are very excited about the potential of Eastern Europe)
Balancing this, we have seen a slowdown in some staples such as generic house Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot and, while it is still growing, Prosecco is starting to plateau as alternatives such as Crémant de Loire and Blanquette de Limoux are arriving on the scene.
